84 men were on the Ocean Ranger on Valentine’s Day night in 1982. Not a single one would return home. This disaster was a pivotal event in Newfoundland and Labrador’s history which changed our lives; nationally, it’s Canada's worst maritime disaster. Some of those aboard the Ocean Ranger were Gonzaga alumni, so each year we hold a ceremony to commemorate all who were lost, and acknowledge those who continue to be affected by the tragedy. As a proud Gonzaga student, as well as a Newfoundlander, I am honoured to have written a piece for this year's ceremony. During the creation of the piece, I continued to learn more about the tragedy. Its weight, enormity and impact on those who were left behind became increasingly apparent. That translated to me focusing on texture, and creating an immersive atmosphere to surround the listener in those emotions. This piece quotes classic Newfoundland folk songs She’s Like The Swallow and The Green Shores of Fogo to pay homage to the songs the crew members may have grown up with. This work as a whole acts as a reminder to cherish those you love around you, and for those who are gone, to never let their echo stop ringing.
the echoes that still ring was written for Gonzaga High School for their 44th annual Ocean Ranger Memorial Service.
