Ethan Gough* (b. 2009) is a Canadian composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, whose works grapple with topics such as climate change and nature, mental health, and identity often combined with an open and light-hearted sense of humour.
Ethan was raised in a musical home, coming to music at a young age. He was constantly found at the piano, or tapping out rhythms and has recently shifted his focus. Ethan has moved to writing classical music, studying composition under Jack Etchegary. His piece "...et le vent est silencieux" was recently a recipient of a 2025 Government of NL Arts and Letters award for a piece which "[showcased] an incredible sense of melody, harmony, and emotion."
He also has a catalogue of solo music, his most recent album “Unbecoming” features the song “Dead Bodies”, which won a 2024 Government of NL Arts and Letters award, and has a new jazz project "endlessly, forever" slated to release in Summer 2025. Ethan is also an avid community musician, playing bass in his school band, CALOS Youth Orchestra, and the Memorial University Wind Ensemble.
When not composing or playing, you can find Ethan enjoying some of his other hobbies, including photography, biking and cooking.
*A note on pronunciation: please read Gough as ‘Goff’ in performance contexts.
