Movement and music are so deeply interlinked. Our body’s natural reaction to hearing anything with an identifiable pulse is to move. Whenever I write, I always try to write with the idea of the performers and the audience moving along with the music, between steps is the literalization of this concept in its purest form. The piece is based on three different types of dances that mean a lot to me, and have inspired my compositional style in some way, shape or form. To begin, the first movement reflex is inspired by my love for electronic dance music, and makes use of classic tropes of EDM, mixed with classical music. Next, the second movement stillness in motion is meant to pay homage to the great romantic ballets of the 19th century, particularly many that Tchaikovsky wrote. These pieces helped shape the love I have for classical music today. Finally, the last movement muscle memory is a jig in the style of traditional Newfoundland folk music and encourages the audience to join along in clapping. between steps is not just a piece for orchestra, it is a piece meant to build a community within an audience.
